聖霊、来てください

兄弟姉妹のみなさん、聖霊降臨のお喜びを申し上げます。

五旬祭の日（ペンテコステ）という、収穫祭を祝うために大勢のユダヤ人が都エルサレムに集まっていました。
この日の何日か前、120人ほどの主イエスの弟子たちが集まっていました。（使徒言行録1：１５）
五旬祭の日、聖霊は一つになって集まっていた主イエスの弟子たちの上に降ったのです。（使徒言行録2:1−11）

聖霊を受けた弟子たちは、霊が語らせるまま、エルサレムに集まってきた人々に話しだしました。
色々な国や町や村から、集まってきた人々は驚きました。
生まれた故郷の言葉で弟子たちが話すのを聞いたからです。人々は自分の耳を疑いました。
「彼らがわたしたちの言葉で神の偉大な業を語っているのを聞こうとは！」と。
しかし、中には、主イエスの弟子たちをあざける者もいました。
「彼らは、新しいぶどう酒に酔っているのだ」と。
ですが、主イエスの弟子たちが酔っていたのではありません。

人々を弟子たちのいる所に向かわせたのは、激しい風が吹いて来るような音が聞こえたからでした。
弟子たちを代表したペトロは声を張り上げて、人々にイエス・キリストについて語りました。
この日、ペトロの言葉を受け入れ、三千人ほどの人々が洗礼を受けました。

50日前に祝われた過越祭と、その後の五旬祭は、元々刈り入れのお祭りです。
この両方のお祭りに、人々は収穫の初穂を神にささげ、収穫を感謝するのです。
過越祭の時捧げられる初穂は大麦、五旬祭の時の初穂は小麦です（レビ記23：9-16）。

「初穂」とは、土地の第一の実りで、その後収穫されるものの先取りです。
大麦と小麦の後、ぶどう、いちじく、ざくろ、オリーブ、デーツがとれます。
こう言った七つの食物があれば、人は生きていけます。
でも、その他、大地の恵みは多いのです。

元来、五旬祭とは無縁な私たちにとって、このお祭りに新しい意味合いがあります。

主イエスが救いの一粒の麦の種となってくださいましたから。
主が多くの人の救いという収穫のために、使徒たちをお使いになったのです。
風と太陽などが芽生え、成長、受粉、結実になくてはならないものです。
父である神様は、そのお力、聖霊を送ってくださいました。

教会は、２人・３人から１２人へ、１２０人から３０００人へと成長していきました。まず、２人、３人から。
これは、人々の出会いやさまざまな理由によるのです。
それは、巡礼、貿易、天災や人災からの移動、新天地を探す旅、などなど。
私たちは不完全で欠点だらけなもので、互いに疑ったり軽蔑したりしがちです。にもかかわらず、聖霊は、私たちの人生を実らせてくださいます。

聖霊の実りは、愛、喜び、平和、寛容、親切、善意、誠実、忠実、柔和、節制（ガラテヤ5:22-23）です。

「聖霊、来てください。」いつもそう願いましょう。

Come Holy Spirit

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I extend to you the joy of Pentecost.

Pentecost draws a large number of pilgrims from different places to Jerusalem.
Some days before Pentecost, about one hundred twenty believers of our Lord Jesus Christ had gathered in Jerusalem. (Acts 1:15)
On the day of Pentecost, they were all together in one place and the Holy Spirit descended upon them. (Acts 2:1-11)

Having received the Holy Spirit, the believers began to speak in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Their hearers were astonished saying, “yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”
Others mocked them: “They have had too much new wine.”
But the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ were not drunk.

A sound like a strong driving wind brought the people and the disciples together.
Peter, speaking on behalf of the disciples, preached to the people who gathered before them.
Accepting Peter’s words, about three thousand were baptized.

Passover (celebrated fifty days earlier) and Pentecost are harvest festivals. (Leviticus 23:9-16)
At both festivals, people offer first fruits to thank the Lord for the land’s products.
Barley are the first fruits offered at Passover; for Pentecost wheat.
First fruits are the initial produce of the land.
They are a foretaste of later harvests.
After barley and wheat, the land brings forth grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.
They are enough for daily sustenance, but the Earth has more to offer than seven species.

For us, Pentecost has a new meaning.
This is because the Lord Jesus became the grain of wheat of our salvation.
God used apostles to bring about a rich harvest – the salvation of many people.
God sent the Holy Spirit: like the wind and sun (and other elements), the Spirit enables growth and fruit-bearing.

The Body of Christ starts with two or three.
The church grows from two or three to twelve, from 120 to 3,000.
People from various backgrounds are brought together by pilgrimage, trade, displacement from natural or man-made disasters, search for meaning and for greener pastures, and so on.

We humans are imperfect and full of flaws.
We also tend to doubt and misjudge one another.
Yet, the Holy Spirit makes us bloom and bear fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Let us always pray: Come Holy Spirit.
