四旬節を迎えて

親愛なる兄弟姉妹のみなさん

2月18日、教会は「灰の水曜日」を迎え、四旬節の典礼季節を始めます。
この日のミサの第一朗読には、次の言葉があります。

「主は言われる。『今こそ、心からわたしに立ち帰れ、断食し、泣き悲しんで。衣を裂くのではなくお前たちの心を引き裂け。』（ヨエル書2:12）」

預言者ヨエルが「心を引き裂け」と言うのはどういう意味でしょうか。
預言者は私たちに、魂をさらけ出し、罪に対する誠実な悔い改めを育み、心の伴わない行為を捨て去るよう求めています。
預言者ヨエルは、私たちに「真の自分になりなさい」と告げます。預言者の言葉の言葉を聞いて、シェイクスピアの『ハムレット』でポローニアスが息子に語った言葉を思い出します。「自分自身に正直であれ。そうすれば、夜が昼に続くように、誰にも偽ることはなくなる。」

四旬節の典礼季節は、私たちに祈りと断食と寛大さを求めます。これらは単なる慣習ではなく、回心へと導く道なのです――私たちが真の自分になるために。

四旬節の間、私たちの祈りが神の変わらぬ臨在を再発見へと導かれ、断食が私たちに真の渇望を識別させたり、私たちが行った施しが誰かに本物の優しさを感じさせたりするよう願っています。

平和と優しさが私たちの足元から始まりますように。

As we welcome Lent

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On February 18, we begin the liturgical season of Lent with our observance of Ash Wednesday.

The First Reading, from the Book of Joel, has the following words:

“The Lord says: Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. (Joel 2:12).

What does the Prophet Joel mean by “tear your hearts”?

The prophet asks us to lay bare our souls, cultivate sincere repentance for sin, and abandon superficial acts.

The Prohet Joel tells us: “Become your true self.”

The words of the prophet reminds me of the words of Polonius to his son in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.’”

The liturgical season of Lent calls us to prayer, fasting, and generosity. These are not mere customs, but paths leading to conversion – so that we may become our true selves.

During the season of Lent, may our prayer lead us to rediscover God’s unchanging presence, our fasting lead us to experience what we truly long for, and may our works of charity make someone feel authentic kindness.

May peace and kindness start from us.
