新天地

新年度を迎え、心華やぐ季節となりました。
多くの皆さんは新しい始まりの日を迎えられたことでしょう。
これから始まる生活への期待とともに、不安も感じておられると思います。

今年は、東日本大震災から15年という節目の年です。
あの出来事は、多くのいのちと日常を奪い、深い悲しみを残しました。
同時にこの15年は、人と人とが支え合い、つながりの中で生きることの大切さを、私たちにあらためて教えてくれた時でもありました。

私たちは今もなお、不確かな時代の中に生きています。
今年の2月28日に始まった中東戦争の影響は、私たちの日常生活に及んでいます。

そのような中で、聖書の言葉を一つご紹介しましょう。

一粒の麦は地に落ちて死ななければ、一粒のままである。
だが、死ねば、多くの実を結ぶ。（ヨハネによる福音書12章24節）

これは主イエス・キリストご自身のお言葉です。

「死」は絶対的な悪です。
「死ぬ」という言葉は、苦しみを伴う思い出を呼び起こします。
「死」は絶対的な悪ですが、絶対的な終わりではありません。

私は、死の後には永遠のいのちがあることを信じています。そして、死別は、悲しんでいる残された人に、豊かな実りを与える機会となることも知っています。
日常生活の中でも、私たちは別れたり、失望したり、傷ついたり、傷つけたりして、小さな「死」を味わいます。

この聖書の言葉は、そのような経験を通して成長することの意味を、私たちに教えてくれます。新しい環境の中で、自分を変えることや、これまでの自分を手放すことは、時に勇気のいることです。

失敗や戸惑いを経験することもあるでしょう。しかし、その一つひとつの経験が、私たちを豊かにし、大きな実りへとつながっていきます。

主イエス・キリストの受難と死は、全人類の罪の身代わりとして十字架にかかることで、神と人との和解、罪の赦し、そして死の恐怖からの解放を成し遂げました。この犠牲により、人間は神の愛と永遠の命を受け取り、新しい人生を歩む力を得るのです。

日常生活においての立ち上がりや仲直りといった人生の再スタートの恵みを感謝しつつ、主イエス・キリストのご復活のお喜びを申し上げます。

Fresh Start

In Japan, we welcome a new fiscal year on April 1. With new beginnings, we experience joy, anticipation and anxiety. I wish you the best as you start a new chapter of your life journey.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. That disaster caused many deaths, disrupted many peoples’ lives and left behind deep sorrow in many peoples’ hearts. These past 15 years have also been a time that taught us anew the importance of supporting one another and human connection.

We continue to live in uncertain times. The war in the Middle East, which began last February 28, affects our daily lives. In these times, I recall these words of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. (John 12:24)

The words “death” and “die” evoke painful memories. “Death” is an absolute evil, but it is not an absolute end.

I believe that there is eternal life after death. I also know that grief over a lost loved one may transform a bereaved individual into a stronger and purpose-driven person.

In our daily lives, we experience small “deaths” through partings, disappointments, being hurt, and hurting others. The words of our Lord Jesus teach us the meaning of growing in and through such experiences.

In a new environment, changing ourselves or letting go of who we used to be asks for courage. We may experience failure and confusion. Yet each of these experiences enriches us and leads to great transformation.

Through His suffering and death on the cross, Jesus Christ took up the sins of all humanity and brought about our reconciliation with God, the forgiveness of our sins, and liberation from the fear of death. We receive God’s love, eternal life and the strength to walk the path towards a new life because of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us be grateful for the grace of new beginnings (such as being rehired or being reconciled) in our daily lives. Let us extend to each other the joy of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
